Sometimes, we pause to recharge, only to find that returning with resilience feels harder than expected. Yet, it’s in this struggle that we rebuild our strength, emerging more focused and determined.
Here are some insights from my experience to help you successfully re-enter the workforce after a break.
- Focus on Your Strengths: Instead of applying to jobs at random, take a strengths assessment to understand your skills and passions. Consider if your previous experience aligns with your current interests.
- Join Women’s Networking and Upskilling Groups: Many organizations offer networking and skill-building for women returning to work. Get involved, attend events, and actively network with other professionals.
- Seek Supportive Employers: Look for sectors and companies that welcome professionals returning from career breaks. Many startups, multinationals, and local businesses have strong return-to-work programs.
- Stay Informed and Engaged: Join LinkedIn groups related to your field of interest and participate in discussions. This helps you stay updated on industry trends and expand your network.
- Build a Strong LinkedIn Profile: Create a LinkedIn profile if you don’t have one, and be consistent with your activity. Engaging on LinkedIn increases visibility and shows your commitment to rejoining the workforce.
- Prepare for Opportunities: When interviews come up, make sure to prepare thoroughly. Practice responses to potential questions and showcase your skills confidently.
- Be Resilient and Focused: Be prepared for judgment or skepticism. Prove your value through hard work and expertise. Treat your return as a project—plan each step carefully, and follow through with dedication.
